2025 Nanjing Cultural Exchange and Study Tour
Lam Tai Fai College organized a six-day, five-night “Nanjing Cultural Exchange and Study Tour” from March 29 to April 3. Once again personally led by the School Supervisor Dr. Lam Tai Fai and Principal Kwok Kim Fai, the delegation of approximately 60 teachers and students embarked on this educational journey to Nanjing. Through visits, cultural exchanges, and community immersion experiences, the school aims to help students gain insights into the nation's development, understand national conditions, and ultimately enhance their sense of identity and pride as Chinese citizens.

School Exchange
The most significant part of the itinerary was undoubtedly the school exchange. We visited three schools: Nanjing Jinling High School, High School Affiliated to Nanjing Normal University, and Nanjing Foreign Language School. Upon arrival, our teachers and students were warmly welcomed by each institution.
Students from both regions also formed paired partnerships to immerse themselves in the local school culture comprehensively. In addition to attending classes, students from our school participated in experiential courses and sports activities, such as kite-making, 3D printing for artifact restoration, calligraphy, dragon dance, and learning to raise the national flag. Everyone found these activities novel and intriguing, and they felt a deep sense of accomplishment from creating their own works firsthand.

Students from both regions bonded seamlessly. WONG Sum Miu, a Form 5 student, remarked on genuinely experiencing the warmth and dedication of local teachers and students, who patiently taught them dragon dance, allowing them to embody the spirit of “dragon's descendants”. Students from our school also joined the flag ceremony team, practicing precise movements such as leg lifts and arm swings. WAN Chun Yau, a Form 4 student, shared, “Though the drills were highly demanding, they made me feel the thrill and pride of guarding the national flag as we marched in unison, watching that vibrant red rise solemnly into the sky.”
Over the three-day school exchange, students transcended geographical and linguistic boundaries to share academic experiences and exchange gifts. As our students prepared to leave, both sides lingered with reluctance, exchanging contact information and quietly sowing the seeds of friendship between peers from both regions.
Teachers from both regions engaged in professional exchanges on teaching practices, enabling both sides to gain insights into each other's educational environments, unique characteristics, and school philosophies. This was an immensely meaningful and professional exchange activity.
Visiting Historical Heritage and Cultural Sites
A trip to Nanjing, renowned as the “Ancient Capital of the Six Dynasties”, would not be complete without exploring its historical relics and culturally rich landmarks. Teachers and students visited numerous sites, including Niushou Mountain, Jinling Ancient Town, Jinghai Temple, Dr. Sun Yat-sen Museum, Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum, Xuanwu Lake, City Wall of Xuanwu Gate, the Oriental Metropolitan Museum and the Memorial Hall of the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders. These visits offered profound insights into the city’s deep cultural heritage.
On the first day of the itinerary, the group explored Niushou Mountain and Jinling Ancient Town. Arriving in Nanjing amidst the vibrant blooms of spring, they were captivated by Jinling Ancient Town’s classical elegance, which radiated the grandeur of the Six Dynasties era. Combined with the serene landscape and pastoral culture surrounding Niushou Mountain, the experience allowed everyone to truly grasp the “cultural splendor of the Six Dynasties” and appreciate the harmony between Nanjing’s history and its natural beauty.
The school arranged visits for teachers and students to the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Museum, Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum, Xuanwu Lake, and City Wall of Xuanwu Gate. Undaunted by the 392 steps leading to the majestic mausoleum and memorial hall, everyone climbed resolutely to the summit. Nicole, one of our exchange students, reflected, “As I ascended the 392 steps, I was shocked by how the stairs behind me seemed to vanish when I looked back—it was quite inspiring.” The 392 steps also served as a metaphor, encouraging teachers and students to persevere through challenges without retreat. Inside the memorial hall, the guides’ detailed explanations vividly brought to life Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s legacy. His final words, “Peace, struggle, and save China,” deeply moved the group, instilling a profound sense of patriotism and historical responsibility. Later, as the group arrived at Xuanwu Lake, once a strategic moat, and its imposing military-defensive walls, the spirit of safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and heritage resonated powerfully among all.
On the fourth day of the trip, teachers and students visited the Oriental Metropolitan Museum and the Memorial Hall of the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders and engaged in a sharing session with descendants of survivors. The photographs and artifacts displayed in the memorial hall confronted students with the harrowing history, prompting them to grapple with the loss of lives and the depth of human suffering. Conversations with descendants of survivors left the group profoundly stirred, reinforcing the understanding that history is not merely the past—it is a collective duty to honor and preserve its memory.
HU Ming Lo, a Form 3 student, shared, “This experience made me realize that we must confront history with courage and cherish the peace we have today. I felt the resilience and unyielding spirit of the Chinese nation in the face of adversity.” Through this deepened understanding of history, teachers and students recognized their responsibility and mission as members of the nation.
Experiencing Local Life
For students from Hong Kong, the most captivating aspect was undoubtedly the daily lives of local residents. As the saying goes, “Food is the necessity of the people”, and to truly experience local culture, one must start with cuisine. In the evening, teachers and students visited the East Zhonghua Gate Historical Culture Block, the Nanjing Confucius Temple Pedestrian Street, and the Qinhuai River, immersing themselves in the vibrant pulse of everyday life. Walking through bustling streets lined with vendors selling local snacks and artisanal souvenirs, the group eagerly shared and savoured the culinary delights, indulging in the lively atmosphere. For a time, everyone cast aside daily stresses and simply revelled in the joy of the moment.
How could one visit Nanjing and miss the Qinhuai River, revered as the “Mother River of Nanjing”? Teachers and students boarded an ornamental pleasure boat for a night-time cruise along the river. The banks unfolded like a painting, with ancient architecture and shimmering reflections merging on the water’s surface. Amid the glistening ripples, the group immersed themselves in the poetic scene captured in the verse, “Mist veils the chilly waters, moonlight cloaks the sands; By the Qinhuai River’s banks, we moor near taverns in the night” Seizing the moment, everyone snapped photos to memorialize the experience, soaking in the charm of the ancient capital and creating cherished memories.
Teachers and students visited the Jiangsu Satellite TV, exploring television production processes and gaining insights into the daily work of media professionals. Students even had the opportunity to step into the news anchor’s seat, getting a firsthand taste of broadcasting. Additionally, they participated in interviews, sharing their reflections and insights from the trip.
Appreciation Banquet
To express heartfelt gratitude for the wholehearted support and assistance provided by the Jiangsu Provincial Government, Nanjing Municipal Government, and related organizations and individuals during this study tour, Lam Tai Fai College hosted an appreciation banquet before concluding the trip.
Dr. Lam Tai Fai, the school supervisor, stated, “Through exchanges and visits, we aim to deepen teachers’ and students’ understanding of Nanjing’s history, culture, education, economic development, and social livelihood, thereby enhancing their sense of identity, belonging, and pride in the nation. We hope to sustain collaboration with our sister schools and organize more learning activities in the future, fostering complementary educational strengths and synergistic development between the two regions. By nurturing these cross-regional school ties, we also aspire to advance educational progress.”
As a gesture of thanks, the students poured their hearts into vibrant performances, singing and dancing with wholehearted dedication. Onstage, they delivered energetic performances; offstage, the audience watched in rapt admiration. Their captivating acts and heartfelt reflections deeply moved all the guests in attendance.
Following the students’ heartfelt performances, School Supervisor Dr. Lam and Principal Kwok led the teachers in conveying their sentiments through song, joining the entire room in a chorus of “Beneath the Lion Rock” and “Friends”. The collective singing elevated the banquet’s atmosphere to its peak, concluding the evening on a perfect note.
The “Nanjing Cultural Exchange and Study Tour” has allowed us to deepen our understanding of local educational development, pedagogical approaches, and cultural traditions through campus visits and academic exchanges. Students forged meaningful friendships and engaged in mutual learning via paired partnership programs, where they exchanged ideas and honed their skills together. Immersed in the rich historical and cultural ambiance throughout the compact itinerary, both teachers and students marveled at the uniqueness and charm of traditional Chinese culture, significantly broadening their intellectual horizons. While gaining profound insights into China’s historical legacy, students further solidified their cultural identity and patriotic sentiment. They also came to recognize their responsibility in preserving history and promoting Chinese cultural heritage, making this an exceptionally valuable exchange experience. As the ancient proverb states, “Reading ten thousand books is like travelling ten thousand miles”. This journey has vividly embodied the timeless wisdom of integrating scholarly pursuit with real-world exploration.
