Members of our school's Visual Arts and Fashion Design Society recently visited The Hong Kong Polytechnic University to join the "Chinese Cultural Festival." Our students participated in an Intangible Cultural Heritage Workshop about traditional "Zhongxin Flower Lantern."
Upon arriving on campus, our students were deeply impressed by Poly U's iconic red-brick architecture and profound cultural atmosphere.
The visit began with an exhibition called "Hakka Heritage in the Bay Area: Shaping a Shared Future" — Greater Bay Area Hakka Cultural Joint, allowing students to understand Hakka history, traditions and core values. Afterwards, students joined a hands-on workshop to design and assemble traditional Zhongxin lanterns. The whole learning experience was enjoyable and rewarding.
Through this activity, students have gained a thorough understanding of the cultural essence of Zhongxin lanterns, which have a 600-year history. In Hakka, "lantern" sounds like "descendant", symbolising family prosperity. Ornamental patterns carry wishes for peace and abundance. Its nail-free tenon structure embodies Hakka people's integrity, perseverance and craftsmanship.
This cultural exchange activity enabled students to experience traditional craftsmanship, explore the beauty of Chinese heritage, and strengthen their artistic awareness and cultural confidence.
